Okay, I Know... It's Been a Minute (Plus: A Free Bookkeeping Checklist)
So it's been like two months since I posted anything on here. Life got busy, and this blog just kept getting pushed off. I'm constantly telling fellow business owner friends, "don't let it pile up; it's harder to catch up later than it looks," and then I go do the same thing with my own blog. Lol. No judgment if you're nodding along thinking about your own small business bookkeeping right now.
But I'm back, and I actually want to talk about something I see constantly — not just in my own life, but in basically every business's books before someone actually sits down and cleans them up.
Most of You Don't Actually Know What Your Numbers Are Saying
Not because you're bad at business, but because nobody taught you to read this stuff, and honestly, most software doesn't make it easy either. You know you've been busy, and you maybe even know you made money this month. But could you tell me the actual number? For example, could you tell me if you have enough cash sitting there to cover next month, or if what looks like profit is really just money that's already spoken for? That gap between "profit" on paper and actual cash flow is where most bookkeeping problems start.
If You're a Real Estate Investor, It Gets Trickier
Can you tell me which property is actually making you money and which one is just eating it? Or is it all just one big blob of "the portfolio's doing fine"? Bookkeeping for real estate investors really needs to happen property-by-property, not portfolio-wide, or you're blind on which units are actually worth keeping.
And the repairs vs. improvements thing — I promise you, this confuses more people than anything else, and it can genuinely cost you real money at tax time if it's not tracked right from the start.
Honestly, this is really common.
It's just what happens when bookkeeping gets pushed to "later" (see: me and this blog, lol). Most of the time, we can fix it with some good-ole catch-up bookkeeping — and usually way faster than people expect once someone actually digs into it.
Take the Free 5-Minute Books Health Check
So I made something. It's ten honest yes/no questions that'll tell you exactly where you stand. No fluff, no spreadsheet needed, just answer from memory. Drop your email below, and you'll be taken straight to the checklist
And hey — no matter what your score ends up being, that's not a judgment at all. It's just information. What you do with that information is totally up to you (though I'd obviously love to help — check out my bookkeeping services here if you're ready).
I’ll be back soon! And this time I mean it about not disappearing for two months again.
